FIRST EDTION is stated in the middle of the copyright page, with full number line "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" on the bottom. Boards are light beige with copper lettering on a gray textured spine. Book is 9.25 inches tall. Back of dust jacket has two reviews for The Known World by Jeffrey Lent and Peter Matthiessen; and three reviews for Lost in the City.

Warning: the book club edition also states first edition, and also has a full number line. But the boards are black, and the book is shorter than the true first.

The Known World won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
